Differences Between Flange Nuts And Standard Nuts

Flange nuts share basically the same overall dimensions and thread specifications as conventional hex nuts. The key difference is that a flange nut integrates the nut and washer into a single piece. Its flange surface is usually equipped with anti-slip serrations, which enlarge the contact area between the nut and the workpiece. Compared with the assembly of a standard nut plus a separate flat washer, flange nuts deliver firmer connections and higher tensile load capacity.
The large bearing contact surface of flange nuts makes them suitable for specific assembly scenarios. When two components are fastened by bolts and nuts, the bolt hole on one component is often enlarged for easier alignment. This facilitates positioning, allowing bolt assembly without precise matching of the two holes. However, the enlarged hole reduces the effective contact area of standard nuts against the connected parts. Adopting flange nuts can avoid this problem.
Some flange nuts are provided with anti-slip grooves on the flange face. Apart from expanding the bearing area, they also offer certain anti-loosening performance, so they are widely used in various rotating mechanisms.
